I was wondering what would be a good lens to buy for an Olympus E-420?
I would like to use it for family portraits, nature and wildlife, pets, and some architecture. I was thinking of buying the Zuiko 40-150mm lens (which I can get for $100), or the Zuiko 70-300mm(which I can get for 300). At this point and time I don’t want to spend $300, so would it make sense to go for the $100 lens? Right now I have the 14mm to 42mm lens kit that came with the camera. Or what do you think I should get for my camera; this may include other lenses or accessories. You help will be much appreciated!
The 40-150 is a decent lens, it would add to your focal range but it wouldn’t be a standout portrait lens at all.
Like everybody else, Olympus has several levels in their lens line. The 14-42 and 40-150 are on the bottom level. The midgrade stuff costs much more, like the 14-54 f/2.8-3.5 and the 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 combo. New, that runs about $1,500 or so for the two of them, but they are much better lenses.
If you need a longer focal length, the 40-150 lens will fulfill that need. If you don’t need more reach, I would recommend saving the money for something better in the shorter side, like the 14-54.
